How to: Upload CSGO Hammer 4.x map to Steam Workshop

In this guide, I will give you a stride-by-footstep tutorial on how to become your map on the workshop!

Earlier You Outset

In this guide, I will teach y'all how to upload your own made Hammer 4.x (or above) map to the Steam workshop.

Before you commencement out, you need to have a few things fix;

  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive installed
  • A solid net connection
  • Your saved .BSP file
  • The other files that come with the .BSP file (example: .VMF file)
  • Screenshots of your map
  • A thumbnail that looks adept (Tip: Add some filters and big text in a programme like Photoshop)

<-- This is a great example for a thumbnail!

Now, once y'all have those files ready, we can go to the showtime step!

Step 1: Placing your files in the right place

This step is very,

very of import

(as of Januari 2019) because if you identify your files in the wrong folder... you will get the very common error: Error opening *your file* (bank check for write enable)

How to?

To do this correct, you have to go to your CSGO install directory.
This is probably right here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive

This is what my CSGO directory looks like:

Your directory might expect a lilliputian different, but don't worry well-nigh that.

What you want to do adjacent is click on the binder "csgo" -> "maps"
At present you should exist correct here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\maps

In this binder, you desire to brand a new folder and identify all your CSGO SDK files that Hammer made for you lot in in that location.
Mine looks like this: C:\Programme Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\maps\Fast Paced 1v1 Map

You probably don't have the pictures folder and the "steam-workshop-description.txt" file. That'due south because I put those in there myself. Information technology'southward just so that I know where I tin can find those files later on if I want to update my map.

When yous're washed, we can go to the next step.

Step 2: Uploading to the Workshop

Well done! You at present made sure that you don't become the common error "check for write enable" Let's get to the adjacent step.

To go along our (extremely brusk) journeying to uploading our map, you have to get-go upwardly your Counter Strike: Global Offensive game from the Steam client.

The developer console

When yous are at the chief menu, you lot desire to open up the programmer panel. You can plow this on in settings -> game settings -> developer console "on".
The standard key the open up the developer console is "~" only I set mine to "NUMPAD *" in the keyboard settings. It's upwardly to you lot.

To open the workshop publisher in CSGO, you have to follow these steps in order.
ane. Open the developer console.
two. Type "workshop_publish" and printing "Enter" or "Return" on your keyboard.

You will at present see this screen:

Click on "Map" in the elevation-right-hand selection dots.
After that, click "Add" in the lower-right-hand corner.

You volition now come across this screen:

Publishing the map

Fill this function in for yourself, but

only

put i word in the "Description" box, as this will only let you employ a sure corporeality of words in the workshop publisher. Don't worry, we will change this later on in actual workshop page. For at present, only type something like "Text".

For the BSP file, you desire to select the .BSP file that you saved earlier in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\csgo\maps\your-map-name

For the preview image, select a screenshot of your map, or a nice edited thumbnail like this one:

When you lot're done, tick the "I accept read the Workshop FAQ......" box and click "Publish"
Now Steam will prompt you to type something similar "I Understand" in the text box so that there won't be another M4A4 - Howl in the game.

Now we are almost done!

Step iii: Giving your map a description, adding pictures and backup

Well done, you are at the concluding and final step to becoming a professional CSGO map maker! :)

Y'all can close your CSGO at present.

To see your map in the workshop, go to your Steam profile, click "Workshop Items" and information technology volition exist in the list.
First off you want to put your map on individual, so we have all the time to modify it and make the page look really good!
To practice this, click on "Change Visibility" in the owner controls box and prepare it to private.

Hmm but didn't we forget something? Ah yes! Nosotros forgot the description!

To change the description, go to your workshop particular, click "Edit title & description" in the owner controls box and give your map a nice description. You lot can go all out with GIF'southward, screenshots, links, assuming text, underlined text, italic text and mode more than! Become ahead and play with this for a while, this guide won't leave. :P

To add your nice screenshots and/or videos to the page, click "Add/edit images and videos" in the owner controls box and upload them.

If other people contributed in making this map, y'all can add together them by clicking the "Add together/remove Contributors" and you tin can select people from your friend list. Once y'all save, it doesn't show them right away. Your friends have to take that they have contributed on this workshop detail from their ain invites.

Don't forget

Don't forget to modify the visibility dorsum to "Public" when you are complete done!

BACKUP!

This is probably the MOST important thing if y'all don't desire to re-write your clarification every time you update your map (how I will explain in the side by side affiliate)
Like I said earlier, the workshop editor merely allow'southward you lot use a certain amount of words, and then please brand a directly copy of your description and identify it in a text file. (Example: Notepad) Save this in a place where it won't get deleted and where you can find information technology over again. That's why I put mine in the folder with the .BSP.

(Optional) Stride 4: Updating your map

Ah y'all've come to update your map, don't worry it is not hard at all!

How to update

To update your map, you have to open your Counter Strike: Global Offensive game once again and open up your workshop publisher.
Once yous click on the "Maps" button, you lot will see that your map is correct there!
To update it, highlight it, and click "Edit" in the lower-right-mitt corner.

Information technology volition expect something like this^

Select your new .BSP file, select your new(or old) thumbnail and as y'all can see at that place is a new box.
This new box says "Changes this update"
In this box y'all can blazon update/patch notes to inform your map users what has changed in that update.
Once again, you can become all out with assuming text, underlines text, ect.

Once you are done, tick the "I have read....." push and click "Publish"
Blazon "I Empathize" again and hit "Ok"

Now your map is updated!

Restoring the description

In the previous chapter, we fabricated a backup of your workshop item's description. And this was for a reason. When yous go back to the map's workshop folio afterward updating, you can meet that the description is cut off if information technology was long enough. If it's not the case, so at that place is no problem.
Simply if you had a long clarification, yous have to copy and paste that text backup from the saved file into the edit description box.
I hope it makes sense.

Cheers for reading

Cheers all for reading my guide, I hope I've helped y'all!

I will keep updating this guide if things change in the process.
